Last Exile is one of those anime series that’s been floating around for a few years now that I repeatedly made mental notes of considering while shopping. With commercials and trailers that hinted to some kind of early-avionics days adventure, it looked engaging enough but always seemed to win passed by for some flashy-boxed mecha OVA or gritty, modern-day plot series. This is must-see anime in the purest sense of the view and kudos to Funimation for refusing to allow such a well-constructed title to hasten through the cracks.

Gonzo is a studio that has had a very diverse range of shows that it has made but Last Exile is by far the best, and one of the best animes out there. It has a steampunk comely which always adds a hint of mystery and romance to the setting, which is astronomical considering the place requires honest that. It is an uplifting record with a lot of heart, definite to beget novel and stale fans alike like.

Warning: This anime actually has region, character development, and depth. This is not for folks that want plenty of blood and guts fights, sword and sorcery, and/or fan service from unrealistically proportioned female characters. This is one of the classiest shows out there.

If you gain in your heart that, despite every hurdle, peace is possible between the Israelis and Palestinians, this film will have you with hope and wonder. That’s not to say it’s rosy - the children depicted in the film often show madden and intolerance, but the mere act of recognition between the children of these two warring groups is enough to inspire faith in their futures. This film is a fine document of a precious, gallant and tenuous experiment on the allotment of the filmmakers. May we all have the courage to try to guide the next generation into a more mild, more notion world.

A astonishing presentation, Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune combines the Dune Messiah and Children of Dune novels into this unique miniseries and does so with one beautiful motion. Well, almost radiant.

I don’t know WHY the SciFi Channel feels the need to retain a “titanic name” in these films. William Pain didn’t support the first miniseries with his ‘Hurtful’ acting. Likewise, I felt Mrs. Sarandon did nothing to help in the release of this film/mini. Her character was cardboardish and dreary. No action bright her at all. Nothing that seemed to encourage go the storyline along.

Uncharacteristically (and thankfully) Alec Newman reprises his role as Paul (and the fresh Preacher) and does so with powerfully strong acting (the true opposite of what I saw from him in the modern miniseries) . Julie Cox was fabulous as Irulan, Jessica Krige excellently portrayed an aging Lady Jessica, and James McAvoy WAS Leto II. Jessica Brooks balanced the role of Ghanima perfectly by playing Leto’s twin sister. And Daniela Amavia was P-E-R-F-E-C-T as the possessed and tortured Alia (preborn sister of Paul) . She’s also quite an atractive lady.

The costumes (thankfully) were also ‘toned-down’ a bit, so the sizable head-dresses and triangular suit attachments are gone. The budget for the special effects were increased (to gigantic advantage) . Loved the worms, the thopters, Alia’s temple. Astounding cinematography utilizing blue screens.

Julie Cox steals the demonstrate away everytime she appears. Some complained that the script took (major) liberties concerning Irulan–mainly by giving her more appearances and lines than the book ever afforded her, and making her more likable–but I say anything that gives Julie Cox a chance to appear on conceal to flex her acting muscles is a safe decision. James McAvoy, in particular, brings so great spirit and warmth to his role that he brought much-needed levity to the role of Leto by adding humor and warmth to his performance. Jessica Brooks brings thoughtful, pensive Ghanima to life respectably well. It should be renowned that the twins are portrayed as teenagers in the miniseries, which I believe a wise decision to gain them more relatable and easier to spy for first-time viewers.

Though I had loved Saskia Reeves’ Jessica, Alice Krige takes a turn in Lady Jessica’s shoes very well. She fleshes out the piece of the Atreides matriarch and delivers a very reserved performance, which is befitting the cautious Jessica in the book. Edward Atterton (who played Arthur in TNT’s ‘The Mists of Avalon’ and has appeared on shows like ‘Firefly’ and ‘Alias’) plays a wonderfully convincingly warrior-mentat. Daniela Amavia’s gut-wrenching, explosive performance as Alia was highly racy to sight, and her last scene brought so grand more emotion to the events than the book afforded it. Daniela, Alice, and James came together so well in Alia’s last scene that many people who saw it were teary-eyed after watching it–it had me in tears. The book, however, didn’t reach anywhere approach that level of emotional impact.

I conception Susan Sarandon’s performance was tolerable–nothing great–but I judge it is unfair to blame her. She was horribly miscast. In a display where almost everybody had an accent of some sort, Susan’s thoroughly American accent was completely out of location. Add that on top of the fact that her performance wasn’t as strong as some of the others, and no wonder she’s being singled out as the traditional link. She’s impartial not at home playing a science-fiction villain.

As far as costumes, special effects, and props go, I enjoyed each of them immensely. The costumes are collected a bit quirky, but they are worthy more subdued and realistic than what they were in CoD’s predecessor. Where as the costumes in Dune were downright ‘kooky,’ the clothes in CoD could be considered ‘fasion.’ The special effects were very well done for a television feature. ‘The Voice’ was grand cooler in CoD, with soft growls and whispers overlapping over each other on top of the warped speaking to provide a richer, more majestic ‘Voice’ better capturing what it was in the book. The glow-in-the-dark blue eyes are traded in for more subdued blue eyes that are intellectual without looking radioactive. Everything comes together and molds comfortably with the situation create, which boasts soft, warm colors and lighting that build the places leer like they exist in a perpetual sunset. Indeed, the overall recognize is a very beautiful one.

First off, I’m a colossal Christie fan, and Ten Dinky Indians is my approved of her stories. This is a solid, delectable retelling of the account, though it lacks the top drawer quality of the 1939 novel. The entire 39 cast was terrific. This one has some vast performances, some competent ones, and some laughably terrible ones. Standout in this cast are Wilfrid Hyde White as the Believe, Stanley Holloway, Daliah Lavi, Shirley Eaton, and Hugh O’Brian. Equally poor are Fabian as the playboy, and the butler, can’t remember the actor’s name. The butler delivers some lines as though he’s sleepwalking, and overacts at other times. I don’t consider I’m giving too worthy away by saying that Fabian’s performance is so over-the-top grating that’s its a relief when he’s the first character to topple.

Other enthralling developments-though unruffled tame by today’s standards, this version has considerably more sex and violence than the recent, in which most of the bodies were kept offstage. In this one, most of the murders occur on camera, including one in which a character plummets to their death in a cable car, a spectacular development not in the book. Indeed, Christie’s murders were usually very super, a gun, a knife, poison. Not something as pure Hollywood as this. The fact that this death also bears no resemblance to the nursery rhyme, a key situation point in all versions of the record, doesn’t seem to bother the screenwriter at all. Oh well.

One other engrossing change-the spinster character of the book and recent movie is changed here and in the other remakes to a glamorous actress. Although Christie purists will probably be upset, I don’t contemplate it did any distress, particularly since I enjoyed Daliah Lavi’s performance.

All in all, this production is flawed, but quiet absorbing and well worth seeing, especially if your a Christie fan. Not as safe as the 39 version, and grand better than the God-awful 1975 and 1989 remakes.

In volume 12 we finally near at the house of Virgo. In this house we explore one of the most memorable battles of the entire Sanctuary saga. The series fair keeps getting more and more intense the closer we net to the final fight.

With 5 episodes on each disc, a substantial dub and no editing I have been very impressed with ADV’s handling of this classic series. However, it now seems that this might be the final volume. How can they lead us on for 12 volumes and then ditch us a few episodes before any sort of closure.

I cherish the first three Indy films. Like so many others I was greatly looking forward to seeing a original one. I view (or hoped) that the very long time they took to reach up with a script meant they were polishing it to a smart shine. After seeing the movie, I do it was really a long negotiation between Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford, with some of them keen to earn a crappy movie, and some of them not, with the extinguish result being crappy, but perhaps not as crappy as it might have been.

The movie started with a bit of promise (other than the infantile CGI prairie dog) . I’m not as offended by the nuclear fridge scene as many are, because I know those mock towns weren’t built at Ground Zero (or they would have been vaporized) . They were built at a distance to think the conclude of the blast on places some miles from the explosion. So while it’s not credible for Indy to survive being tossed around that remarkable, he didn’t exactly survive a nuclear explosion. Some of the other early scenes, such as those where Indy is actually discovering something, are also apt.

About halfway through the movie, despite my alive to desire to like it, I realized it unprejudiced wasn’t working for me. No suspense. No proper sense of urgency or misfortune. Gross stakes. Too many marginal or pointless characters. Too considerable cartoon nonsense going on, far less believable than anything from the previous films (the dead monkey vine swinging, Marian’s idiotic tree-driving stunt, the multiple waterfall drops…none of it scary, none of it remotely convincing, or even fun) . Marian’s long-awaited vast pronounce was one of the biggest, flattest duds in film history. She shows up and spends most of the rest of the movie impartial tagging along with a dazed grin on her face like she was objective grateful to be there, a flaccid dishrag compared to the character from the first film. Not Karen Allen’s fault…she was objective thrown in for nostalgia’s sake, and was poorly written. Mutt was actually not a dreadful character, but I don’t need or want him to be Indy’s son. Is there any worse cliche in fiction than the Son He Never Knew He Had? I realize Spielberg and Lucas are fascinated by father issues, but I’m not. And then there’s the whole point of the movie…the skull and the aliens…ehhhh. Who cares? The finale was a muddled jumble of flashing lights and wind that meant nothing and evoked nothing but tedium. Remember at the ruin of the previous films, where the characters actually seem to gawk that something wonderful has happened, were even panicked, or traumatized impartial a limited bit (okay, not so mighty in Crusade, where they speedy shake off any aftereffects and devolve into slapstick and lose all interest in their surroundings) . Not this time. The giant flying saucer takes off, and Indy and his massive crew of sidekicks commence cracking jokes.

I don’t want to look this movie again, and I don’t want to absorb it. I hope they don’t effect another, because these guys have proven they no longer have what it takes.

What a mess this movie was. Excellent to survey Indy again but you can utter from the open that Lucas had approval over this script after rumors he threw out so many better scripts out the window (Frank Durapont anyone? ) .

Indy surviving nuclear blasts, Rodents coming up from the ground and grinning at the camera, Shia LaBouf swinging from vines in a jungle with Monkeys and hardly any Marion. She barely has anything to say.

Then you net the ending which comes out of a different movie.

Suspending Disbelief is one thing but you gotta check your brain and taste at the door for this one.

Lets hope they don’t manufacture any spinoffs with Indy’s kid.

With the unusual remastering and re-releasing of the burly Band canon, interest in one of America’s greatest musical acts has never been higher. This is as proper a time as any to lift up a copy of “The Band,” one in Rhino records series called “classic Albums,” which documents the making of classic albums. (other dvd’s include the Wailers, the Who, and the Grateful Plain) This dvd documents the classic lp “The Band” from 1969.

Filled with vintage footage of the Band in rehersals, as well as interviews with Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, the reclusive Garth Hudson, and the slow Rick Danko, “The Band” chronicles the making of this fantastic album, focusing on the disparate musical influences- country, bluegrass, rockabilly, dusky R&B, rock n roll, and folk/Americana- that led to many of guitarist/vocalist Robbie Robertson’s greatest songs.

The surviving members at the time of this documentary (made in 1997-pianist Richard Manuel had died in 1986) add their have anecdotes to the music, giving the songs new colors and life. Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, and Garth Hudson (the most kindly surprise on the dvd taking into story his well known reclusive nature) add to the fun by playing some of the tunes based on their perspective, offering running commontary as they go. Add to the Band’s perspective those of Eric Clapton, (who wanted to join the Band at one point) George Harrison, Elton John’s lyicist Bernie Taupin, and producer Don Was, and the cup of greatness runneth over.

The performances, including “The Weight,” “Rockin’ Chair,” “I Shall Be Released,” “The Unfaithful Servant,” and “King Harvest (Has Surely Approach),” as well as a touching tribute to the leisurely Richard Manuel, develop the dvd all the more principal to fans of the Band. The music is timeless, the interviews vintage, and the performances sparkle as they never have. That makes this dvd one to have in any collection.

If you care for The Band (is there such thing as a casual Band fan? ) you MUST occupy this! There is some repetition of the usual stories, such as Clapton telling us his ‘Big Pink’ anecdote, but others are novel and gripping. Also, there are solo tidbits that will smash your heart. Robby doing Dixie, and Rick, God rest his soul, doing When You Awake. Absolutely notable.
